Alopecia

There are many types of Alopecia, each with a different cause. Alopecia may be localized to one area of the scalp, or it may encompass the entire scalp and or body. Some of the more commonly known forms of Alopecia include:

Alopecia Areata: an autoimmune skin disease which is a non-scarring, recurrent, form of hair loss that may occur in any hair-bearing area. Areata is an organ-specific autoimmune disease, that may present round or oval patches of hair loss.

Alopecia Universalis: loss of hair all over body and scalp, including eyebrows and eyelashes.

Alopecia Totalis: total loss of hair across the scalp.

Traction Alopecia: chronic tension in the hair follicle may lead to hair loss which, if continued over a period of time, may cause the follicles to atrophy leading to permanent hair loss. This form of hair loss may commonly be caused by tight ponytails, hair weaves, and braids.
