There are many things to consider when selecting a wig.

Selecting a wig can be a fun accessory to alter the appearance for a special occasion, or a necessary replacement for hair loss resulting from alopecia or chemotherapy. If you’re considering a high-quality wig, consider many things before investing.

Head and Cap Size

Standard adult wig sizes in the US range between petite, average, and large. Many wigs contain adjustable straps that will give or take up to half an inch for a more comfortable fit. A professional wig retailer will always measure your head carefully and accurately to ensure the best fit. There are three measurements that determine cap size:

  • The circumference of your head from the front hairline to the nape of the neck.
  • The distance from ear to ear across the top of the head.
  • The measurement from the front hairline down the center of the head to the nape.

Selecting a Wig – Cap Type

The base or cap is the foundation to which the hair is attached. Since this component will determine the comfort level as well as the finished look, it is the most important feature to consider.

100% hand-tied (hand-knotted) wigs are the most comfortable caps and we recommend them for sensitive skin or hair loss. Hand-tying each strand on the cap allows the hair to style in any direction.

Lace front wigs create the illusion of a natural hairline with an invisible sheer lace that blends with your skin’s complexion. Tying hair to a section allows for styling it away from the face.

Monofilament caps give the illusion of hair growth at the scalp and you can part and comb hair in different directions.

Basic caps are the most affordable of all wig options.

Hair Type

There are several options for the actual hair portion of your wig.

Human hair wigs have the most natural look and are durable with proper care. Typically, four types of human hair are used in wigs: Chinese, Indian, Indonesian, and European. European hair is generally the most sought after for its fine denier. We can style and color human hair wigs to match client requests.
Synthetic hair often looks and feels similar to human hair and requires little maintenance. However, has limits to its styling versatility, and hot implements may not be used. Synthetic wigs can last 4-6 months with proper care.

Heat-friendly synthetic hair is less durable than regular synthetics and is prone to tangling.

Selecting a Wig – Style

Once the wig is on your head, professionally style it for your facial structure. Most wigs have a certain amount of excess hair to account for styling. If you purchase a synthetic hair wig, be sure that the stylist has experience with them -the tools and training are different than working with real hair.

Selecting a Wig – Color

You can color, highlight and dye human hair wigs to specifications, but cannot alter synthetic wigs. A professional wig consultant can recommend the most flattering hair color for your skin type, and some companies will provide color swatches for comparison.
